Official Launch in Pavia: TEN4CARE Commences its 48-Month Mission to Transform Tendon Injury Treatment
Pavia, October 2 and 3, 2025
Today and tomorrow, the Università degli Studi di Pavia (UNIPV), the project coordinator, is hosting the Kick-off Meeting (KoM) for TEN4CARE (Tendon Engineering for Comprehensive Advanced Rehabilitation and Enhancement). This crucial event officially marks the start of this ambitious 48-month Innovation Action, funded by the European Union under Grant Agreement number 101178590.
TEN4CARE addresses the significant clinical challenge of tendon and ligament injuries, which account for 50% of the approximately 33 million musculoskeletal injuries reported annually. Given the diverse etiology of these injuries, there is currently no «one-fits-all» solution. The project aims to develop innovative, minimally invasive, and personalized treatment solutions.
The Core Innovation
The central strategy of TEN4CARE is the design of an advanced medical device based on an electromagnetic-responsive shape memory 4D nanocomposite fibrous hydrogel. This cutting-edge material is able to:
– Be implanted using Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS).
– Recover its pre-programmed shape at body temperature (32-35°C actuation temperature).
– Combine enhanced structural properties, shape memory, antibacterial activity, and regenerative capabilities.
– Stimulate tendon tissue regeneration via mechanotransduction, driven by the application of external electromagnetic fields (EMF) acting on the integrated magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) and polypyrrole network.
The ultimate goal is to promote rapid recovery for acute or chronic conditions, aiming to reduce the tissue healing time by at least 30%.
A Consortium of Excellence and Institutional Gratitude
The project has secured total funding of €7,929,471.46, underscoring the relevance and potential of this research proposal. The action gathers a multidisciplinary consortium of 16 partners from 7 countries.
During this KoM, partners are reviewing the work plans, which include validating the GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) production processes and developing Digital Twin technology within an AI (Artificial Intelligence) framework.
Stay tuned for our updates to be part of this exciting adventure in tendon tissue engineering!
